The winter holidays were approaching rapidly and Heart House was still without a sponsor for our annual Christmas party to celebrate the end of the semester. We were contacted by Wayne, an actively involved volunteer at Heart House who works for a local outdoor retail store, Whole Earth Provision Co. The store had a huge donation of toys, warm clothes, and educational games to give away. Wayne immediately thought of Heart House and we worked together to spread holiday cheer to the kids of Heart House and the children at Austin Children’s Shelter. Wayne spent several hours of his time sorting through the boxes, wrapping gifts and delivering them to the children.

Whole Earth Provision and Wayne made this past Christmas very special for every child at Heart House. Each student received a wrapped gift on the last day of the semester and was sent off on their winter holiday with a message of love and sharing.

Wayne has been volunteering with Heart House since last summer, and has become a mentor to several of the students. He is light hearted and enjoys what the kids have to say. “I have created some great connections with the children and look forward to seeing them every week.” He admits that the students at Heart House allow him to be a kid and have fun when he is wrapped up in the adult tasks of the day to day.

When Wayne is not working or volunteering, he can be found playing music all around Austin. He is the bassist for his band, “Graham Wilkinson and the Underground Township.” He also enjoys traveling whenever he can, and makes an annual trip to Mexico to keep his Spanish sharp and to eat real Mexican food. He also enjoys winter sports, such as snowboarding and snowshoeing. Be it near or far, Wayne plays outside and explores his creative side as much as possible.

Heart House appreciates all of the volunteers that share their time and knowledge with the children that we serve. Wayne has opened himself up to the experience of working with children and has enjoyed himself, and in turn, the children have also received him very well. Wayne lives
