Amanda McGlothlin
Amanda has been
volunteering with Heart House since July of 2006. In the past four months,
she has enjoyed her time with all of the students, but she tends to
gravitate towards the Kindergarten and First grade class. She is a student
at The University of Texas at Austin, majoring in advertising. Originally
from Dallas, she exclaims, “I can see myself living in Austin. It is laid
back with nice weather, and it is close to my family.” It is lucky for Heart
House, that Amanda enjoys Austin the way that she does.
Amanda found out
about Heart House online, while researching volunteering opportunities that
would benefit local children. “I like to teaching the kids new things, and
learning things from them that I didn’t know. I always forget how smart
children are!” Amanda is in her senior year of a very intense program called
Plan 2, but still finds the time to help the children with their homework
twice a week.
For her senior thesis, Amanda is working on a photography project. She is
taking several candid snap shots of the children at Heart House, and will be
selecting a few that stand out, to compile for her thesis. The children have
reacted very well to her being in the room with her camera, because they are
so comfortable with her. We all look forward to seeing the finished product.
Along with
photography, Amanda enjoys several activities. Some of her other hobbies
include: sailing, cooking, eating, and hanging out with friends. Amanda is
in the sailing club at the University of Texas and gets out on the water
every chance that she gets.
After Amanda
graduates from college, she plans to join the Peace Corps. She is interested
in teaching in a Latin American country, but remains very open minded about
the entire experience. Among some of her greatest accomplishments, she has
taught her cat how to fetch, but adds, “He will only fetch twist ties.”
Amanda is clearly a
valuable volunteer at Heart House. She plans to volunteer with the children
of Heart House until he leaves the country. She is gaining excellent
experience for her future, while helping students with their homework, their
safety, and their self-esteem.
Whether
working directly with the children or providing technical or
administrative expertise in the background, your help is needed!
