Laura Whitter, Volunteer of the Month

Laura Whitter, Heart House Dallas

A never ending task – OFFICE WORK!!!  Have you ever felt overwhelmed by the number of phone calls you receive everyday on the job or the amount of paperwork that piles up around you?  Well, when Heart House found Laura Whitter, we found a jewel!

While attending an open house sponsored by the Volunteer Center for Dallas County, Laura met Shana Fife, Site Director for Sterling Point.  When Shana learned that Laura was interested in providing office help, Laura said, “she swooped down on me telling me she needed help!  How could I refuse such a great attitude filled with such infectious enthusiasm?”  Her true desire is to provide a smile and reassuring kind word to both the kids and the staff in order to bring a positive ending to their busy day.

Shana commented that, “Laura provides database entry and office assistance for our Sterling Point location on a weekly basis and is always faithful and can be counted on – I never have to call her!   She just always shows up!”  Although not working with the children, Laura said she has seen evidence of the children’s desire to be a part of the group while at the same time wanting to be acknowledged individually.  “The kids want reassurance that they can and will be successful in life.”

When asked about a memorable experience at Heart House, Laura replied that she remembered not having enough Easter baskets for all the children, so a contest was in order!  “As heart breaking as it was, the children participated in a ring-toss to determine who would be a recipient.  One little girl who silently whispered into her folded hands for luck, on that third attempt, finally succeeded.  I couldn’t have been more excited for her!  It was a great experience.”

Laura believes everyone should become involved in their community by volunteering in an area where passion is felt or there is needed change.  “After a while you start to become part of the group, part of the plan.  I hope to gain a sense of accomplishment that in some small way I’ve made a difference.”

Isn’t that what it’s all about?  Whether working directly or indirectly with the children, your help is needed!  Check out our website and volunteer opportunities or fill out an on-line application today!
