Dyan
Hernandez heard about Heart House Austin a year before we officially
opened. She saw a request for
volunteers in the Austin Chronicle and began using her technical writing
skills to help Heart House Austin get started.
Dyan
is originally from
Del Rio
,
Texas
and she moved to
Austin
in 1994 to attend The University of Texas.
She has a background in accounting and has been working for the
Texas Department of Transportation while earning her graduate degree in
accounting. However, Dyan
plans on moving to
Iowa City
this Fall to start Law school at the
University
of
Iowa
where she has a full tuition scholarship! Congratulations,
Dyan!
Volunteering
has been a part of Dyan’s life for many years.
She spent two years volunteering with AmeriCorps.
While in AmeriCorps Dyan worked at an afterschool camp for children
in
East Austin
, and she counseled pregnant teenagers on prenatal care.
At Heart House, Dyan not only volunteers weekly with the
afterschool program, she also has aided in volunteer management and
proposal writing. Initially
when Heart House Austin was forming, Dyan was asked to help write the
Volunteer Handbook and began answering the inquiries from potential
volunteers. She worked for 3
months as the “Volunteer” Volunteer Coordinator until Heart House
hired Lisa Thompson to take over.
Most
recently, Dyan volunteered to write two grants for Heart House.
One of the proposals concerned reducing juvenile delinquency with
an emphasis on preserving the family.
The other proposal was to a foundation in
Austin
that gives money to deserving community organizations.
“Dyan is one of those great volunteers who does anything and
everything we have a need for. When she says ‘just call me’ she
really means it," says Executive
Director and Founder, Anna Land. "I'm always impressed with the level
of professionalism and care with which she carries out her volunteer work;
whether it is writing proposals for grants or helping a child with his
math homework, Dyan gives 100%. She's a great lady, as well, and
we're going to miss her when she leaves for law school.”
Spotlighting
Dyan as the Volunteer of the Month is the least we can do to thank her for
all her help at Heart House Austin. Thanks, Dyan!!
