Who can volunteer for the afterschool program?

Any adult with an interest in meaningful work with local children is welcome to volunteer at Heart House!

What if minors want to volunteer?

Heart House serves children in kindergarten through sixth grade.  In order to maintain healthy relationships between children and volunteers, we are only able to accept volunteers who are 18 or older.  Occasionally we will make exceptions for highly motivated 16 or 17 year olds who have an interest in working with our youngest kids. For more information on ways that young volunteers can make a difference, contact the Volunteer Coordinator.

How much time is required of volunteers?

Volunteers who have an hour or two each week can make a significant impact in the lives of Heart House kids!  The Volunteer Coordinator will work with you to develop a schedule based on your availability.

What hours to do volunteers work?

The Afterschool program is open Monday through Friday from 3:00pm to 6:00pm during the AISD school year.  A six hour day camp program runs weekdays for eight weeks during the summer.  If you are not available during program hours, contact the Volunteer Coordinator about other ways to get involved.

What do volunteers do at Heart House?

Volunteers who participate in the afterschool program assist children with their daily homework, talk about their day, join them for a snack and participate in thematic curriculum based on the theme of the month.  During activity time you may find yourself making edible cookie maps, playing a game, or helping the kids with a class presentation. Every day at Heart House is a new adventure!

Can I use my special skills at Heart House?

Absolutely!  We are always happy to hear volunteer’s ideas for new activities.  If you would like to share a special talent, hobby, or job skill, contact the Volunteer Coordinator to discuss your interests.

Is there a background check?

All Heart House volunteers and staff undergo a criminal background check.  The Executive Director will make the final decision on the eligibility of volunteers with a criminal history.  Participants in one-time group projects are exempt from background checks.  For more information, contact the Volunteer Coordinator.

Can I volunteer at Heart House for my court ordered community service?

Because we work with children, Heart House is unable to accommodate court ordered community service volunteers.  We suggest you visit www.handoncentraltexas.org, click “volunteer” and browse available projects.  Look for the line “court ordered” on the project summary.

Are special volunteer projects available for groups or individuals?

Yes!  There is wide range of possibilities for special volunteer projects.  The Afterschool program regularly hosts groups who come for special activities with the kids.  Individuals can lead school supply drives at school or work, distribute flyers around town, or provide administrative support from home.  Contact the Volunteer Coordinator to set up your special project based on your interests and availability.

If you have any questions please feel free to contact the Volunteer Coordinator by email or phone, 929-8187. Thank you for your time and consideration. We look forward to working with you to provide a quality volunteering opportunity!
