| Mission
Statement: |
Heart
House is a free afterschool program dedicated to providing a safe haven and
academic support to low-income children and encouraging them to become good
citizens.
|
|
History:
|
Heart
House started in the summer of 2000 when founders Suzanne
Kiefer and Anna Land, while volunteering their time with children in the Vickery Neighborhood of
Dallas, Texas, quickly realized that these children
required a "safe" environment in which to obtain
homework assistance, mentoring, friendship, and above all,
protection from the idleness and negative influences they
find in their daily afterschool lives.Heart House is open
for three hours after school, Monday-Friday, with extended hours during the
summer and winter breaks. Heart House is free to all children -- the Heart
House kids "pay" for their clubhouse privileges by participating in
community service projects. Our thematic
teaching in a clubhouse environment stimulates critical and creative thinking.
The collaborative learning groups encourage a team effort for completion of
authentic assessment projects every few weeks. Technology, health & urban
safety, the arts, physical education, and character development are all woven
into our monthly themes. Field trips and special guests provide informal,
hands-on, working experiences and enrich prior knowledge.
The two became partners and Heart House Free
Afterschool became a reality. Starting with the
pilot program Heart House at City Central, the organization added a second
facility in June 2001 called Heart House at Park Hill (formerly the Royal Oaks facility).
A facility in Austin opened August 2002.
