This just in……..Heart House is making the news!

We have been incredibly lucky lately to be featured three times in the local community and media!

Two different television station programs have highlighted important programs at Heart House, including our special holiday gift giving and our volunteers’ thoughts on the special services that they and we, as a whole, provide our children. Also, we were selected as an important program to be highlighted on a special holiday series called “Season of Sharing”.

In addition, we were a featured client at a holiday fundraiser for Skinny’s Gallery here in Austin, which gives us free tickets to shows throughout the year at the historical Paramount Theatre. Our Program Director had the wonderful opportunity to speak about Heart House and network in an effort to build critical and meaningful relationships within the local community.

This kind of exposure is tremendously helpful in getting the word out to the community about the heart of our program and the critical need for enriching afterschool programming everywhere.

Being in middle school is a challenge that most of us would agree can be awkward, emotional, and more turbulent than anything we’ve ever experienced on an airplane. Cliques form, along with attitudes. Workloads double and require more time, thought, and energy. Unfortunately, there are not as many afterschool programs for middle school students to attend, which is why we welcome many 6th and 7th graders into our program.

And Maybelline is no exception. While she gets in later than most of the elementary students, she immediately sits down with her homework. She usually has more homework than any of the other students, but remains focused on finishing as much as she can while she is here. Which is why it is no surprise that she is an outstanding student at her middle school, making mostly As in all of her classes. She is a great helper in many capacities, whether it is organizing papers, monitoring the hallway, or supervising clean-up time. We are proud of Maybelline for remaining strong in tough times, taking care of her younger siblings, and working hard to succeed at school!

Forces of Nature

What impact can forces of nature have on our lives? This month students will explore this question through video, experiments, and personal experiences related to different types of forces and why and how happen. They will discover how wind, tornadoes, volcanoes, hurricanes, earthquakes, and thunderstorms work in order to understand how they impact the land and its people, both negatively and positively. Heart House students will end the month by suggesting ways for others to be prepared and safe when they do occur.

Did you know?

  • Rotating tropical storms are called hurricanes when they develop over the Atlantic or eastern Pacific Oceans. They are called cyclones when they form over the Bay of Bengal and the northern Indian Ocean.
  • Although some volcanoes are considered extinct, almost any volcano is capable of rumbling to life again. Volcanoes provide valuable mineral deposits, fertile soils, and geothermal energy.
We'd like to thank this month's sponsor, Whole Earth Provision Co.

Whole Earth Provision Co. blessed us with a huge donation of toys, warm clothes, and educational games to give away. Each student received a wrapped gift on the last day of the semester and was sent off on their winter holiday with a message of love and sharing. In addition, Whole Earth worked with the Heart House children to donate most of the toys the children at Austin Children’s Shelter, which were dropped off just in time to spread holiday cheer.  Thank you!
